If you won the lottery and broke up with your partner is it true you have too give your ex half of the money?

Someone told me that and I don't know if its true or not. If it is, is there ways to get around it?

Thanks! If you won the lottery and broke up with your partner is it true you have too give your ex half of the money?
the only way that you have to give the half is if you are married ,the other way everything is yours ,it is the same if you are not married and you live with your bf in your house ,if you break up with him ,he has to leave ,but if you are married you have to give somethingIf you won the lottery and broke up with your partner is it true you have too give your ex half of the money?
If your divorced already or your legally separated for more then a year, they get nothing, unless you have kids. In your state California palimony laws. That could take money out of your pocket even if your just dating, well dating them for seven years. Like you said, half no way!

Once under the gun, you learn. Don't let anyone screw up that business you built. That would be a shame, but the lottery, what the heck, you can afford to be generous just don't get screwed.
If you live in a community property state like California and if you are married-- I believe this is a yes. You'd have to sell your home and divide up the profits in 1/2 as well!

I'm not really sure how this works in those holy unions or if people have lived together for 7 years but not ';really'; married with the document.

Get around it? Sure. Hire an attorney and pay him or her with your winnings! Hey, it's not going to your ex, right?
It depends on the palimony laws in your state.
Yes in some states. Don't tell.
